Hi, my name is Amy and I am from Pittsburgh. I have had dobes in the past, but their ears were already cropped when I got them. I have a question that I am hoping someone can help me with or shed some light on it for me.
I got my dobes ears cropped yesterday. She is playing, eating drinking, etc....but ever since I brought her home and she came out of the anesthetic fully, she squats to pee numerous times after she goes initially but nothing comes out...she keeps squatting and thinking she is peeing, and isn't. She also came into my house and pooped on my couch! She has never done anything like that before. The vet that did her ears gave me antibiotics to start her on today, which I did and they gave me a pain medication for her, but I read lots of horrible things about it and lots of deaths so I am not giving her the pain meds.
Has anyone ever experienced anything unusual just after ear cropping? Should I be overly concerned? Because I AM concerned, just not sure what to do. Help please.
Thank you, Amy

Hey Amy,
I've seen plenty of dogs act like that after undergoing anesthesia. It's very common for SOME dogs/cats to have relaxed bladder/bowels. Normally it's back to normal in 24 hours though. Or at least in my experience. Normally when I see dogs squat to urinate with nothing coming out, I think of UTI. Many dogs get into position to urinate, but because of the pain associated with the UTI it hurts too much. So you then, see them squat multiple times for a few seconds at a time trying to slowly empty their bladder. What pain med did they give you? If it's Rimadyl use it. It's the safest pain med in the Vet world. Or again, at least in my opinion. We used it at my old clinic on a regular basis with no issues even once. But that of course doesn't mean that your dog will tolerate it. But as far as safety is concerned, I love Rimadyl. Have fun with the taping of those ears!!

Scott,
Thank you so much for replying to my post!! I was thinking maybe it could have been the anesthetic, but I am not a vet, so it was just a guess.
No, they didn't give her Rimadyl...they gave her Previcox 57 mg, told me to give half a pill once daily. I went online to see what the side effects of that medication were and came across some scary stuff about dogs getting so ill after 1 pill and dying days later. I won't be giving it to her. Not gonna take a chance. I feel bad for her, because I am sure she is in some pain, though she doesn't show it. I just keep soothing her and keep her as calm as I can.
Yeah, the taping...that is the fun part, huh? The worst part for me will be getting her to sit still so I can post them. i still have a little over a week before that happens, so I will enjoy this next week! lol
Anyway, thank you so much again for responding.
Oh, almost forgot...if it would happen to be a UTI, the vet where I had her ears done also gave me Amoxicillin 200 mg to give to her 2x daily. So hopefully it prevents infection for her ears as well as clear up a UTI if that is what it may be. I will call my regular vet on Tuesday and have her looked at just to be on the safe side. She is my baby!!!! Love her to pieces!!
