After reading some opinions of the "experts" on this forum I'm curious so i'll ask this question How many of you people DO actually compete? With competition i don't mean bh's or titling I mean REAL competition I hope to get a lot of replies Patrick ;D

Hm, I guess REAL comtetition means different things to different people. I don't come here often anymore. Seems to be that nobody gets along and there are too many egos to fit in a virtual room.
I have competed at club and regional levels. I have competed in DVG, UScA, ADA, and UDC events.

Wow, how disheartening your comments are Patrick. Guess when Cash and I compete for our IPO1 we won't really be competing after all. Why bother??

By reading some of the replies i think either i didn't ask the question properly (English ain't my first language) or people misunderstood.
In NO way i was trying to insult or look down on people when it considers titling or whatever. My question wans't actually purely about ipo either. I just wondered in general. I appriciate anybody who does something with their dog in any venue and have fun.
The reason i asked this question is that i read some old dobermann usa magazines and always the same names kept comming up in the results: Thomas Barriano, John K, Melody Pfeiffer...I know Wendy and Eryn are competing in schutz as does Lynn and of course Steve Burger...people like Tami are doing their thing in ring but i was just curious about the rest of the people.
What i mean with the difference in titling or competing is that people over here call the ipo 1,2 and 3 examinations and when you reached that we call it competing. But it is not something to be disheartening about of course. Actually Lynn you should now since you're one of the only ones i like on a forum LOL.
So i hope i made myself clear now and again if i offended someone with this first post I'm sorry...
Patrick

I"m not nearly as active as I used to be. I lost Dubheasa and Jago within a month of each other four years ago and had to start all over again. You throw in a crappy economy and fact that I'm old (65) and fat :-) I'm just hoping to get some titles at club trials in Colorado. Unless I hit the LOTTO ;-)

I think of it as a process. Initially for me it is was just hoping to get a title on the dog. I was not "competing" against anybody for anything. From there it has been a process of continually trying to get better results, so I guess at that point it is basically competing with myself to get better. Both as a handler and getting the most out of my dog.
From that point forward there are a number of factors...first it is about getting better dogs who have the potential to be successful in competition against others, and continually trying to overcome my own shortcomings as a handler (and there are plenty of those) and to develop the relationship with my dog. I see myself as having a ways to go before being successful at major competitions is a reality.
I have what I need to be successful... excellent training system and direction, good helpers and a good dog. I have a fair amount of knowledge. Hopefully some day my handling skills will come close to catching up to the rest of it.

We have been competing with our dobes for a few years now. Patrick "competes" more than I, first with Jett who he took to 6 IPO 3's and now it is Cowboys turn to get out this year depending on what we can afford to attend. Cowboy has 3 IPO 3's now and a few more failures, LoL! Once we have a dog get to it's IPO 3, then that dog gets out to compete at events that we can afford to do. If our dogs are not at that level then just mostly club trials as they train and sometimes show while they are titling. One day I hope we can afford to do some of the more major events, but this year looks like it will just be DVG National and IPO Classic and they just did the UDC national. But for us, it is not so much about the event as it is enjoying getting a dog to that level and the fun and challenge of continuing to work with them and bettering their scores. I also think trial experience is invaluable no matter what form it comes in. There is always something to learn and always a "my dog never did that before" moment. Always something to fix or do differently next time with the next dog. Of course, the "experts" say a dog that doesn't compete at the major events is not a real dog and the judges are all "santa Claus" , but that's okay too. Sport is all about what you enjoy or want to do for yourself. I am always proud of my dogs when they do well no matter where it happened at.

Yes Tami is doing her ring thing still! I agree Patrick. In ring when you get to ring 3 then is the time to really start, 1-2 are levels to go thru to get to level 3. Most ring 3 dogs I know have upwards of 20-30 trials at ring 3, and they compete until they are 8-9 years old. Hell like fine wine they need time to age to perfection! Riker is 5 years old now and we are still working our stuff out. I hope he will still be competing when he is 10 as well!

I have just join the group and I have done AKC obedience, I have done Search & Rescue, therapy work at Hospitals. I have also done a little conformation and have really found my passion in the sport of Schutzhund. I have just titled to IPO3 and truly love the sport and the Doberman breed. I wish I could have gotten in the sport in my 20s. I have met a lot of good people! I hope to always own a Doberman and do the sport of Schutzhund.

Trying to compete in high level, but my dog have had a neck injuri started 2 weeks before the WDC, so that's the reason way we haf to pull from WDC and AWDF...
He's looking and feeling better now, and have been working for a month now without any problems, so the NE Regional is next on the list...
