Hello everybody. My name is Marco and I just became a member. I live in Toronto Canada. I never had a dobermann but my next dog it will be one. I used to have a GS 30 years ago in Europe. The last 24 years in Tampa FL. and in Toronto I always have had American Pit Bull Terriers. My last boy now is 13 yrs and 7 mos old, but after he's gone I will get a dobermann. I have been doing a lot of research in the last year and I believe this is the breed for my family and I. Dobes and Pits have some common traits and characteristics like both been "Velcro dogs", active, great with their family members, very athletic and short haired. The dobes are way better guard dogs, more intelligent and hopefully less hard headed than the bull breeds. I will be looking only for a dobe from European working lines but with the proper size head and bone mass. I don't mean the Rottweiler looking dobermanns that many breed in Eastern and Southern Europe but neither the Greyhound looking dogs that can work. I want a good balance of looks, working ability, good health and character/nerve. Working dogs of every breed are healthier, more level headed and more stable than dogs bred for looks only. I will be asking some questions from time to time and I will appreciate your advice. Regards, Marco.

Welcome from Brampton, ON! Are you planning on working Schutzhund or other sport work with your pup? There are many Schutzhund clubs in and around Toronto. I can answer any questions you have, and if I can't there are others here from the area who can

Thank you DeDe. I am glad nobody threw a fit like some members of another forum, because of my preference of the European type dobermann.

Hello Cassie. Yes I am planning to get involved in Personnal Protection and Schutzhund. I don't have a puppy yet because my old boy does not tolerate other animals around. I will be reading the posts and keep educating myself. Thank you again for the welcome.

Welcome to the forum. Good luck in your search. Most of us like a good looking dog. Initially I was drawn to the "Euro look" you describe but came to realize that what is most important to me is working ability..drive, nerve, temperament. To be quite frank, I think that is kind of tough to find in any line where conformation is the top priority. One has to think of the Dobermann breed from 3 angles..work, conformation and health. If health and working ability is a higher priority than conformation you would not likely continue to look at the dogs you describe as desirable, in my opinion.
