I think the interview is full of useful information. I even try to gather breeding thoughts from GSD people. While we certainly have a different breed, I think there is room for development and think anyone should be open to another breed owners experience. His thoughts on judging, drives, etc are extraordinary in my opinion... www.vangoghkennels.com/pb-htdocs/Adobe%20Files/ElmarMannesInterview.pdf

This is still the Working DOBERMANN Forum isn't it? What's with all the GSD trainers (Mannes/Collins)and articles about GSD's and breeders? I don't care how many big events you go to....I don't EVER want my dog turning back on me the way the dog did on the video at 2 minutes when I'm just stroking him :-(

Personally I like watching stuff like this Doberman or not. And the fact that this forum doesn't see much traffic to begin with, I personally don't see the problem:) While it's always better to see Dobermans in the video, I think you can always learn things from watching any breed.

One thing I can say unequivocally ....I have learned a hell of a lot more useful information from hardcore GSD people than I have from Dobermann people since I have been in the sport.

For the record..Lance is a DOG trainer who just happens to own Shepherds.
As an owner of multiple breeds I can appreciate a good working dog of any breed. IMO very few dogs, even GSDs, nowadays show any power in the bite work, so it is refreshing to see one who is trained to see the helper as someone to fight with, rather then play tug with.
I went to an Elmar seminar a few years ago and when I asked him if he would work my Malinois he said “NO. that breed cannot work on me.”.
It was only after he saw her work, that he stepped in and said..:Yes, I will work her..” He was impressed and shocked that a Malinois could handle his style of work as most are worked without any real pressure.
He is a huge asset to working dogs, and is the most talented helper I have ever seen!

The video:
I really like the work that Glisnik does. The video is five years old what has the dog been doing since then? Nice grips and control. I did NOT like the dog turning on the handler at 2 mins. The bark sounded like prey to me?
Tracey
Did you have a working spot at the Mannes seminar? What kind of a "helper" doesn't work what ever dog shows up?
"the most talented helper I have ever seen!" How many helpers have you seen? :-) Armin Winkler was a pretty good teaching helper, but I haven't worked with him in a long time. Trial helpers: Tim Cruser and Waine Singleton

Maybe I should have said for a man his age ;D
He truly is an amazing helper, but he style isn’t for everybody. He won’t work dogs that he believes can’t handle his pressure.
He expects a dog to bring power, pull very strong and ignore the equipment.
My Malinois bitch has a tendency to come up and bother the helper by laying on the sleeve or stand on her hind legs to bark in the helpers face if she thinks they are not a threat to her. The first time I have seen her plant all four feet was with Elmar! He brings an incredible amount of power from a dog.
He also worked my SchH 3 GSD who I got as an already titled dog and never learned how to pull. With Elmar he learned pulling..
Sid, the dog in the video was born in 2001 so he is retired now as a stud. He has produced very well, lots of his progeny seen at the big trials. He came 15th at the BSP one year himself, other then that I don’t really know everything he did.
I’d have to re watch the video to see what you are talking about..
I have worked with a few helpers/trainers over the years.. My first seminar was Joanne Plumb/Fleming. I have trained with many Germans, a few Belgians and Americans. My favourite helpers share Elmar as a mentor..Lance, Raino Fluegge and Marcelo Villanueva. Marcelo trained up an American helper, John Bochenek, so I would work with John again as well, even though it has been a long time since he has worked a dog of mine. They all work a dog the way I like..too many helpers lack the skill I want. I I have never worked with Armin but have heard good things about him and Tim C. With my experienced dogs, I will put them on anybody, but with my young dogs only certain people get that privilege. We are training up a new helper from Michigan right now, he takes direction well and is doing quite well..
