Hello, I am new here. I made this account to ask the help of this forum to find a breeder. I am looking for a companion and protector that is built well and has an unshakable nerve. That said, i don't want a bomb. European lines seem to be the best fit for me, but i am open to others.
I know what i want in a dog and don't need help with that part really, what i need is help finding the right breeder. I want someone who truely cares about where their dogs are going. Someone who does a lot of puppyhood developement, and does not wait until they are 8 weeks old to work with them. Basically, i am looking for a breeder that will ask me a ton of questions and ask for reference before they give me a puppy. Thanks you for your time.

Now that you told us what you want? How about telling us who you are? :-) What's your name? Where do you live? Male or female? What is you experience with dogs in general, Dobermanns in particular? What do you plan on doing with a Dobermann puppy, any kind of protection sport, Agility or other organized activity? Are you looking for a personal protection dog or a house pet?

I don't give out my name on public forums, but if you are a breeder i am looking at, i would of course tell you. I live in Alaska I am female...not sure why that matters. Dogs in general, i am very good with. I understand and adore them. I am a relative beginner (only about 8 years training dogs), but i am a quick study when it comes to canines. I have four dogs at the moment, none of them Dobermans. (Timmy, Jesse, James, and Storm) I have worked with plenty of dobermans, mostly mixes, at the pound. I would plan on doing agility, hiking, swimming, and perhaps flyball. The pup would be my companion and personal protector, though i will not "formally" train any of this (by formal, i mean i won't enter into competition or seek certification.) I am looking for a companion/protector. I was originally planning on officially training a PPD, but i have decided against it, at least for now. The last thing i want is to go to court, they see i have trained my dog to be a "dangerous man-eater" and put him/her to sleep. When it comes down to it, the right dog will protect me and i can handle myself in a dangerous situation enough to not need the help. Feel free to ask more questions, anything that can help.

Are you looking for a breeder in Alaska or are you willing to have a dog shipped? Our Dobermans are mainly Euro with some American mixed in the lines. They have great temperaments and a lot of drive. Since Dobermans were originally bred for personal protection if you find a good Euro or Euro mix I don't think you will have to worry about PP training. Ours will step in front of us and will go into passive protection mode anytime a threat is perceived. I would recommend my breeder but unfortunately she is skipping a year between breedings. It's difficult sometimes to find a good breeder that does all the health testing and is willing to back their dogs. I'll keep my ears open.

I think Dobermanman was asking what sex you wanted the dog to be, not whether you are a female or male. Despite what people have heard about working dogs, most dogs are very reluctant to attack humans, thus it must be trained to be effective and done correctly if the life or death situation ever arises. Sure, most Dobes are protective, but training is a must for this breed. Not necessarily schutzhund or bite work, but a working breed tends to be happier and more fulfilled if they work. If I was looking for a dog with a strong working pedigree to be my "protector", then I would expect to put quite a bit of protection training into the dog. Even the dog being of euro lines does not guarantee it will be able to discern who is a threat and who is not without proper training, much less defend you while minimizing injury to itself, you, and even the intruder. I would trust a dobe with protection training more than a dobe without it, in almost any scenario. I like to think of it as martial arts for dogs. Martial arts does not make people more aggressive, it makes them more efficient and able to cope better in a dangerous situation in case the need ever arises. I am going to try to be as tactful as possible: please don't write it off until you educate yourself about it. I am pretty new to schutzhund but not the dobe breed and I have talked to several people, watched several videos, read several books... it is not about making a dog a man eater. Anyone feel free to offer a different opinion or correct any part of what I just said. I am learning too. But I am definitely giving the sport and my dog a chance to do what it has been bred to do.
