Hello to all. Let me start by saying I do not currently have a Dobie , nor have I ever had one. I am, however, giving serious consideration to a Dobie from working lines for my next dog.. Now that I have the time, I have been thinking about trying my hand in Mondio Ring or PSA, or something similar. What i would like to know from members is why the Dobie is your breed of choice. Why not a Rottie or Beauceron? I have always admired the looks of a well bred Dobie just not those overly long necked, greyhound looking ones. I have never had the chance to work a quality Dobie from working lines but am starting to look forward to the experience. Thanks in advance for your input.

Welcome to the forum! First off, most of us in the working dobe circles refer to them as 'dobes' or 'dobermanns'. A 'dobie' is akin to a pomeranian or something similar. Now, the reason that I chose the dobe many years ago was that they were the only breed created for the express purpose of protecting man from man. Being a single mom, this suited me very well. Their willingness to please, desire to be with their human companions, natural desire to protect what they considered theirs, all of it played a big part in why I chose them. To better understand them, their drives and desires, I joined a local SchH club to help nurture those natural desires. This also gave me the piece of mind to know that I could also control those desires when necessary. Raising 3 small children with my dobes at the time, control was a must! I've never regretted my decision!

The Rott or the Buauceron are NOT at all similar in temperment to a working dobe -- just in markings!!
So maybe the question might be what would be the second choice of those of us that choose a working doberman??
Now that is a HARD question for me to answer -- there really isn't another working dog with the same qualities --

Thanks for the feedback ( and spelling lessons!) I understand the other breeds mentioned are different in temperament and I have worked mainly herding breeds in my career. It is time to try something different. I sure love their looks and reading the posts on this forum. I'm looking forward to hearing of others experience with training and working a Dobe.
