This topic came up on another forum and I thought it was pretty interesting so I thought I would post it here as well.
How do you balance your family life and your dog sport? How do you balance your time to be able to get your training in but also give the support to your family that it needs?

Normally, I train 2 x per week at club which takes a number of hours. Plus a few days a week to a park for ob. Tracking is seperate (usually) and that is another 1-2 times per week. Hubby is not interested in doing any of those things with me.
I am lucky in that I am a teacher. So I am only at the office about 6 hours a day. The rest of my work can be done at night, at home. So I have some daylight left after work to train the dogs.
I am also very lucky that my hubby has a hobby (he is a rockstar!) so there are no fights about me spending too much time with the dogs. When I am with the dogs, he has lots of time to practice.
There are no kids here, so no time spent on that stuff. Normally, I have lots of opportunities to train.
I will say that we are working on our house now so that has effectively stopped training. That is real work, yikes!

Its called 5 am I get up to either do obed or track before work just about every day in the summer. I usually do protection 2 a week with very little travel time and we have small club so does not take up alot of time. Honestly I dont know how people with young kids do it? But power to you!!

I gave my daughter a dog. She is at an age where she can actually do some things and is interested in training. That certainly makes dog sport more interesting and less of a conflict. My wife has no interest but that's another story altogether.

well, I'm pretty lucky because I work at a vet clinic, and can take my dogs to work, go to training right after or before I have to be there.
the hubby trains and works dogs for a living so if i want to train another day with elsa, i can just ask him... but i have to give a back massage for every training session. damn it!

for me it is a very precarious balance. It makes for very full days. I am very lucky to have a great family support network from my mom and dad with my 4 year old. I find that my completely non dog friendly spouse acts as a ground for me, and alot of times forces me to see beyond dog training! Altho I am not always too fond of the reminders.
