I lost my last Dobie to DCM at 5 1/2 years old and knowing that DCM is big in the breed is there away I can stay away from it taking my next Dobie at such a young age?. I'm looking at Adlercrest Dobermans right now what are your thoughts on the health/longevity of their dogs?. Do the reputable breeders have the problem of losing dogs at young ages?.

It can happen in any line. Responsible breeders will try their best to increase the chances of it not happening by doing health testing. This would include EKG's, Echo or ultrasound holters, and the new test for one of the identified DCM markers by Washington State University.
Adlercrest would have to be considered ethical. I don't know about their average longevity.
What are your plans for your future dog?

Thanks for the reply! I'm looking for a companion but if I move to Vancouver in fall I would like to get into Schutzhund or french ring. Is there an age time frame when a dog should be started in the sport? the closest club to me now is 8 hours away! too far, but if I move to Van there seem to be a few there.

There are usually people training just maybe not clubs in several remote areas. Are you in northern BC? Tamara McIntosh

Your best bet would be to do a lot of research of a lot of bloodlines and a lot of breeders. If you are serious about moving, I would also wait until the move and then go to the clubs in the Lower Mainland area of BC to see what it is you would want to do. As far as FR, Vince Nulles at Langley Ringsport is a good guy and appears to be open to any breed as long as the dog is decent. As far as Schutzhund there is my club, (West Coast German Shepherd Schutzhund Club), Delta Schutzhund Club, and the Lower Mainland Club. All of them are more GSD orientated but open to other breeds at least to a degree. It helps to have a good dog. Going to the clubs before even getting a dog, is the best way to go IMO.

Tamara McIntosh I'm in Prince Rupert BC right now but hopefully moving to Cranbrook for 6 months at the end of this month, I couldn't find any clubs in Cranbrook to get started in.

There is a super nice lady in Cranbrook that has a malinois she does avalanch dogs stuff with. I know she makes a trip to see Daniel Lybbert in Glenwood to train. But she would be a good resource to get in contact with when the time comes. Daniel is an excellent decoy for french ring as well, as well as hosting a big event at his place every year. This year he will have 2 trials and a seminar.
As well there is a lady training in 100 Mile House, but still quite a hike.
I know there is a schutzhund club in the Prince George area but that is still a ways away from you.
There is quite a bit of stuff you can do and train on your own and several people (including myself) do the majority of training on their own. However i would recommend that you find some quality seminars to attend and use video extensively along with a mentor to ensure things are going as planned.
In regards to your concern about DCM.. we all have that concern. I would look for breeders that holter every year, and have the meurs dna test done for sure at minimum.
best of luck in your search!

Is there an age time frame when a dog should be started in the sport? the closest club to me now is 8 hours away! too far, but if I move to Van there seem to be a few there. That depends on the training of the club. As far as Schutzhund, There is a lot one can do to screw up a dog, if they do not get good guidance. If you get an older dog, you want them to be strong and either raw or have a very good training foundation. With puppies all training ideally would be motivational only. You don't want too well a mannered puppy. No strong corrections, etc. because you can squelch drive. In our system we do not do a ton with young puppies/dogs but tend to let them be puppies. Some places like to do a lot of work with them while they are young. It just depends on the trainers and their methodology. I know at the Langley FR club they do a lot of work with puppies and young dogs..more than what we do at our Sch club.
