Winter in New England is a great time to catch up on all my on-line research that I've ignored all year in favor of being out with my dogs! While I may not be all that new to dobermans, I am relatively new to working dobermans. I currently own 3 dobermans (and one redbone coonhound who loves to track). I owned my first doberman when I was 12 and all (with the exception of my 8 month old) have been rescues. I have done a lot of behavioral training before getting into competition training. I am actively involved in my local doberman rescue.
Currently I own a 4 year old male, Griffin, who is mainly just a pet. He was a rescue who has too many "demons" in his head (clearly put there from some bad "training" by his previous owner) to do anything beyond some tracking and obedience when I have the time for the patience that he needs.
I also have a fabulous 6 year old, Portia, who is my first competition dog. She was turned in to rescue because she was just too much dog for her former owner and, sure enough, she's the type of dog who NEEDS to be doing something productive or she'll drive you crazy. While she isn't the strongest protection dog, she sure does have a lot of heart. I won't go through her whole list of set backs, but will say that she had a stroke about 3 years ago, before she even passed a BH, and has come back to pass her IPO 3 this year. Every time I think she's done she proves me wrong. I am now training towards her FH (for which I need more training than she does) and planning on getting her CDX this winter to give her something to do. She really has been a wonderful dog to learn with, although I am FAR from done learning (and am one of those people who think that you are always learning).
And my newest addition is my 8 month old Italian import, Zoe, who I have slowly started training for IPO/SchH. For anyone like me who loves to check out pedigrees, she is Quint vom Edertal x Kastra di Camugliano (http://www.working-dog.eu/dogs-details/925440/Xtreme%20di%20Camugliano/). She is a joy to work with, which is good since we have so very far to go!
I am glad to be with a group of people who appreciate a working doberman. I am constantly surrounded by GSD people who believe the only dog who can work is the shepard. Nice to know there are others who know the truth! ;D
