I will soon be importing an eight week old puppy from Germany.
I have searched the forums, internet as well as CDC and Customs websites, but wanted to better understand the process.
As I understand it, the puppy must be in good health. Because rabies vaccination will not be given until three months, I will need to complete the CDC's confinement agreement. The agreement requires the puppy to be 'confined' until thirty days after the rabies vaccination.
I was hoping that someone who has recently imported a puppy would be willing to discuss the process and their experience with me. A conversation would be truly appreciated so that I can get the process right and avoid any pitfalls.
Thank you
Mike

hi mike and congrats on the new pup um could we have an update please on who this new pup is? dont leave us hanging. as far as importing goes have a good shipper do the paper work etc. im sure your breeder will have some contacts as there is not alot of them. I have imported 2 dogs from germany and basically once they get here there is no problems. im in canada but i dont think there is a big difference between us and canada. just try to get the pup flown direct if u can all hell can break loose when they have to change planes. I drove 10 hours in snow storm to get my pup direct in to an airport. all the best and keep us updated. lianne

Hello Mike,
your breeder must manage the flight for you. If the dog starts from germany, than the flight must be booked their. We have very good experience with petair.com or airfreight.com.
Greats Sibylle

Whatever you do...understand the customs process & questions involved. One answer wrong, and there will be a broker's fee added on. I have never had the issue but a few years ago when picking up a pup @ Atlanta airport....I met a lady who had imported an Afghan and was really upset because she was having to wait & contact a broker to have her dog released. I did not take a lot of time trying to understand what had happened as I had no intent of importing in the future. Best I remember, it had something to do with answering a question of whether she was a K9 professional or not....maybe someone with more experience can enlighten us to the exact scenario where a broker must be used upon arrival at the airport. Again, I am no authority, I just happened to be with someone picking a pup and struck up a conversation with someone having trouble at the airfreight terminal. Good fortune with the pup

An update...shipping process went smoothly. Puppy was sent via direct Lufthansa flight using Petair. Cargo and Customs processing was easy. It was a long day for the pup. He's been here for a week and has made a quick adjustment to his new home.
