Does anyone know of any dobermans that are currently being used in police work. Or any police departments that i could talk to that have previously used a doberman in the line of duty. i have a few questions i would like to ask about the breed and how they actually work.
-Does the persona of the doberman affect the publics view of the dog and the department? -Is the dog capable of preforming the necessary task for narcotics detection, personal protection and tracking?
i understand that it depends on the bloodline and training. If anyone knows of someone i could talk to that uses a doberman in the line of duty please let me know.

dobermanns could and can out perform GSD and malis at tracking/narcotics detection, personal protection. perfer a pure working bloodlines for police work. i would use a dobermann for police work instead of GSD cause cant have long haired dogs in household.

I would contact Ray Carlisle of Cara Dobermans - he has a dog of his breeding currently working as a K-9.
Also, contact Patrick O'Connor at patrick@incrediblecanine.com who has trained for the International Police K9 conferences and has Dobermans.

from what I've heard (and I am still very new to the breed and protection sports)...
hard, solid nerved, working dobermans that can compete on a national or world level with mals and GSDs are really hard to find.
Show breeders have watered down the strength and characteristics the dobermann was bred for... so you really have to go to a great working doberman breeder.
There are awesome dobermans out there that can kick ass as much as any Mal or GSD... you just have to know where to find them.
The two most prominent breeders that pop in my head in the U.S. are Wustensturm (John K.) and Landgraf dobermanns (Wendy Schmitt) in the U.S.
also have heard that dobermans have trouble in the working environment because of their thin coat and more sensitivity to cold weather.

I tested a lot of Dobes for acceptance for our PSD unit. I never found one that came close to passing. However, that being said, I have to add these were dogs that were being "donated" and probally NOT the best quality. I strongly belivee that were we able or the admin WILLING, we could have found quality. Personaly, I would have loved to have worked a dobe on the streets. I remember seeing one being used by an SO in Florida back in the 80's.

I have never owned a dobie but am seriously considering one for my next dog. I have reading all the posts and researching various kennels to see who has working stock and who actually works their stock. There is , in my opinion, a ton of bias against the dobe as a working/psd dog. If I end up getting one, one of my goals will be to train it to the point where I can show my many psd handler friends that my dog is every bit as good if not better than theirs.` Plus he looks better when doing it. My only hesitation is I don't need a dog trained to that level but it sure would be fun talking trash to the psd handlers !
