Hi,
I think I might have made an account a long time ago, but I can't remember what it was!
I'm from VA...and as my name suggests...I have a dobe and a bouvier training in IPO.

Welcome
BouvnDobe isn't a name it's a handle :-) What's your real name? Tell us about your dogs, names ages sex how far along they are with their training. With those two breeds you sound like a Butch Henderson kind of person? ;-)

Sorry, I'm not good at forum lingo! My real name is Lauren, I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Butch...I train with Carla van Duijvenbode and Fred Samseer. I am the lone Doberman handler at the club...but I do like it that way! I do love working two different breeds. Hans (dobe) is 2, has his BH, and we are hoping to trial for OB1 and TR1 this fall, fingers crossed. He does bitework, but was started late so it is behind the rest. Hans is at a disadvantage as my first dog in working sports, but he seems to be doing great. We just got our retrieves down, but still quite a bit of fine tuning to go! Here is a video of his retrieve on the flat... (hopefully this works) Diego, (the Bouvier) is now 10 months old. He's a ton of fun and has excellent focus. I don't have an updated video of him, but here he is at 8 months.

Hi Lauren
Both videos work fine. The only thing I'd suggest with Hans is doing some flat retrieves against a fence or wall so he gets in the habit of snatching it from the front and not over running and picking it up on the way back. We have a guy who trains in Belgium visiting our club. He has a couple of different idea including a marking stake. You have a second handler reposition the DB after you throw it so it's long wise then he sticks a marking stick (tent stake or piece of re bar etc Painted a bright color or with a bright piece of ribbon on it) on the far end. It seems to help the dogs grab the DB from the front. You can mention it to your Training Director and see what he thinks. Don't worry about protection if he started late. Male Dobermanns brains don't mature until they're three anyway. My Flann didn't take protection serious and he just got his IPO I in June. I like the new Ray Allen 1/2 sleeve it helped me getting Flann to target better. Check out the You tube videos from Vit Glisnik (Chech trainer) to see how they use the 1/2 sleeves and targeting wedges. Diego has a nice attitude and potential too. You're a brave girl working with two alternate breeds. Good for you :-)

Thanks! I like a challenge I think he will get there with protection...I think you're right. He just needs to get his head together! His biggest problem is that he gets too excited and just bites anywhere, no targeting. That is what we're working on, and also a calm grip. I'm not pushing him at all, as long as he is happy we will keep going. I just enjoy working with him so as long as he stays healthy and wants to work, I'm happy. I see what you mean about the retrieve...that makes sense. I will work with him like that. He is pretty goofy right now and likes to play around so most of the time so I'm not too hard on him as long as he does it. We have really been working on the front and holding he dumbbell these past couple months. He does it well, no chewing...so now I want to work on the going out and coming back. In this video I think he picks it up better:

Hi Lauren
The A frame DB pick up is a lot better. Now does that transfer over to the flat retrieve or does the view from the top of the A frame make it easier to spot the DB and make a clean pick up? :-) As long as you're both happy, everything else will come in due time :-)
