Hello I am new(er) to all of this - I am looking to get a puppy this summer and I still have many questions that I would like answered. First I would like to know, what should I be looking for in a pedigree? I do not know bloodlines so I need lots of educating in this department. How is a pedigree to be read? (health test and work/show)When looking at health test results how do I know what it all means? I know what health testing the parents should have but I have little understanding of how to translate some results.Conformation? Is something that only potential show homes look at? I think Dobermans are all gorgeous. Is there something specific I need to keep my eyes on when looking at the parents of a potential puppy?I am serious about educating myself and gaining experience with this majestic breed. Any advice, information, books and so fourth are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Regards, Mandy

I think what you should look for in a pedigree is completely up to you. With that I mean what are the intentions with the dog? If you're looking for a workingdogline your choice will probably be different than when you are looking for a showdog or a daily companion you would take out for a daily walk.
If you wanna know everything about health in whatever line in Europe it's very simple: Ask Bitten Johnson (Jotunheim). She knows a lot of dogs now and in the past.
One thing though but that is just my opinion. Don't believe that every eurodog is capable of doing work in the true meaning of the word. Some people (even breeders) will try to convince you that is possible but as far as I know the last 20 years there was only one dog that could excel in both venues at top level.
About books, dvd's : I don't believe that a dog can be trained with these items. It's nice to read a book or watch a video but the main thing is to go out on a field and actually do it with people who know what they're doing. There are a lot of forumtrainers, trainingguru's etc. but you always have to wonder what they proved with a dog themselves.
Good luck in your search for a dobermann

Thanks for the input. I am looking for a personal protection puppy. I understand how to read the accomplishments of the parents but bloodlines is what I am confused with. I will look into contacting the person you mentioned about health concerns. I know I won't learn how to train my dog from a book or DVD I just know that several breeders tell novice owners about supplies like such that can be helpful prior to ownership. I will be attending some club meeting. Thank you again for your assistance. Mandy
